Kalamazoo, Mich., made a big promise to its students. The school district would send all of its pupils to college -- for free. Katie Couric reports.

Kalamazoo only pays 65% of their tuition. My entire state has been doing this for years! The Florida lottery pays for any Florida student's college education up to 100%. A student with a 3.0 average (and 970 on their SAT)gets 75% of their education paid if they attend a state university, or 100% at a junior college. A student with an 3.5 average (and 1290 on their SAT) gets 100%. It's called Florida Bright Futures, and is funded entirely by the state lottery. This is nothing new.

Nice. I live really close to Kalamazoo. But I can and am going to college next year (and most in my school can too). Can all the colleges fit such an increase? Already they say that admissions is harder this year because of the increase in applicants. Still, people should have the chance money excluded. More people can go to the top schools if money wasn't an issue. Once you can't get financial aid, you're on your own with merit scholarships only. T_T

If Kalamazoo gives free college education to everyone with a C average. In about 20 years, where would Kalamazoo gets thier barbers, the janitors, the police officers, the cooks and waitresses, etc.

It should only be available if the student is living below the poverty line. I mean, college has always been expensive, but it's also a learning oppurtunity. You should look around for a good college loan, so you only have to pay off a bit every month. Plus the amount goes down if you marry, buy a house, or have children. It's one of the best investments you will ever make.

Wow...that was my high school they showed. Kalamazoo was a great place to grow up in. The Kalamazoo promise makes me want to possibly raise my kids even more back home.
