the different make the propellers and spinners!they are completely different from each other!the sound you most hear is the propeller and the enginesound is more in the background, which is similar at both planes!Packard and Rolls Royce Merlins are the same!they are just manufactured by other companies.Packard for the USA and Rolls Royce for Britain.I hope I could help you!

Im sorry, I think I marked spam instead of reply.... Is the Spirfire's Merlin superchaged? You can nearly always tell if a CAR is supercharged by that same whistle sound. Maybe that whistle is coming from the P-51's supercharger?

The P-51A had an allison engine similar to those in the P-40, P-39, and others. The B/C and D models were fitted with the Packard Merlin engine. The P-51A had a 3 blade prop, B/C and D had 4 blade. Early spits had 3 blade, most had 4, very late spits had 5 blade props.

Great camera work!!! It is hard to capture these planes on video. We have airshows every year in Michigan, but never such a great assortment of piston WWII aircraft! Awesome! Thank you!!!!

Well, the Merlins weren't exactly the same... I mean the Merlin in the Mustang is a 'Packard' Merlin and the Merlin in the Spit is a 'Rolls Royce' Merlin. The diffence in the sounds I don't have an answer for because I wondered myself ehat the difference might be. I think the suggestion that the difference is in the airframe I doubt a bit due. This because the howling or whisteling sound seems to be particular coming from the 'D' series, I never heard it coming from a P51B or C ... :-\
